I turned my back on the cameras, trying to hide my moist eyes. I couldn’t believe this day was here. This day was here.I watched out of the corner of my eyes as the dongsaeng that I hadn’t seen in so long gave a few bows to the cameras. Somehow, his soft eye smile still hadn’t faded.I knew it had been tough, and I knew it had been hard. But his smile was still the same.“Thank you!” shouted Youngwoon one more time to the fans and the cameras, then he turned around the face the van that was waiting for us. I put my hand on his back to guide him into the van, and he turned his head a tiny bit to give me that wide grin. I returned it with a forced smile of my own and followed as his camouflaged body climbed into the van.I followed him inside without even thinking when I felt a tap on my back. I looked behind me for a short minute to find Donghae staring at me with his eyes wide. “Teukie hyung, you’re not sitting in the passenger seat today?”“No, you go ahead,” I managed, then continued getting into the van as Donghae gave a woop of glee and took the seat that I usually sat in. I turned my attention back to Youngwoon, who had taken the back seat and was smiling at me expectantly. And at that, I felt a small laughter escape my lungs. That kid, he used to yell at the boys if they didn’t leave him a seat in the front.I followed him inside and took the seat next to him. Although I’d sat next to him, already had given him the first hug, I wasn’t sure how we were. My last words as I sent him off to the military were a sharp, “Reflect on your actions while you’re there. I hope you grow up the next time I see you,” and he’d responded with a grave, dejected silence. I eyed his expression carefully, but he just looked at me, almost carefree, and smiled. “I missed you, hyung.”I nodded, relieved that he hadn’t taken the words I’d said to heart. I gently took his large hand in mine and squeezed it. It was rougher than I remembered it, but stronger.Definitely stronger than the weak, tired hands that I’d sent off to the military two years ago.As I continued to rub his hand, the screaming and the noise from the outside cut out as soon as Ryeowook closed the door after himself, and the faint camera flashes were the only things that reminded us that there was anything in this world other than what was in the van right now.I knew we all breathed a sigh of relief. There was an odd, but not uncomfortable silence in the van. It was just — peaceful. A smile finally came to my lips. It was suddenly as if everything was right in this world. We stayed in the bliss for a moment as the van started moving, then Youngwoon broke the silence.“You know I wasn’t just saying in front of the cameras today when I said I really appreciated that you guys came,” shouted Youngwoon. I startled and stared at him. Why was he suddenly shouting?“Uh — hyu — hyung,” stuttered Eunhyuk, who was looking at Youngwoon, wide-eyed.“What’s wrong?” said Youngwoon, a little too loudly again. And then I understood. What was I expecting? “Youngwoon, stop yelling! You’re not in the military anymore!” I said, the small smile still hung on my lips.“I’m not yelling!” yelled Youngwoon to what he apparently thought was a normal volume, much to the amusement of the rest of the team. Then Kyuhyun climbed up on the seat on his knees to face the back of the van, where Youngwoon and I were still sitting.“So, hyung,” said Kyuhyun, his eyes sparkling. “Tell some stories. You must have so many of them.”“Give him a break, you immature little — ” said Ryeowook, slapping his friend’s back.“No, I just — ” Kyuhyun trailed off without having finished the sentence and faced front again. The silence ensued, and I turned my head to look at the one that hadn’t spoken since we got there.“Sungmin, aren’t you even going to say hi?” I asked.Sungmin, who had been staring outside the window, jumped and looked up. He looked uncertainly at Youngwoon for a moment, but Youngwoon was the first to speak.“I missed you,” he said, then he reached up and ruffled Sungmin’s hair.“I missed you too, hyung,” said Sungmin, smiling awkwardly.I laughed and squeezed Youngwoon’s hand, which I was still holding. “So how are we going to celebrate?” I said mildly, and everyone erupted into speech.“Wait! Didn’t Kibum say he was going to be at the dorm tonight? Because then — ““Can we go out to a restaurant? We could use some meat, and Youngwoon hyung — ““No, but Heechul hyung wanted to stay — “Everyone had started arguing with each other, and I was sure Youngwoon would have smacked some of them on the head for being so rowdy any other time, but today, he just sat there with his fatherly smile and watched. And then I realized; he really grew up.The chaos and commotion grew until everyone was more or less out of their seats, and the manager hyung finally exploded.“Calm down and stay in your seats!” shouted the manager hyung. I looked up at the rearview mirror to see if he was really angry, but he was still smiling, too.Everyone was happy to have him back. When we finally reached the dorm, ruckus resumed with everyone trying to pick up their loose clothes from the floor of the living to make room for whatever would happen today while Youngwoon unlaced his boots at the doorstep. I waited for him to finish, and then I spoke apologetically.“I’m sorry we didn’t clean. We just got back from — you know — ” I hesitated before saying the word “concert”; I knew Youngwoon would have wanted to be there, and that he missed it. But if he did, he didn’t show it.“I know you just got back from Super Show and I know how tired you get afterwards,” said Youngwoon stepping out of the shiny black boots that he’d just finished unlacing. But before I could answer, Donghae rushed past us, waving his phone.“Hyung! I’m ordering pizza!” shouted Donghae, then he ran to a corner of the living room.“They’ve become a bit more chaotic,” commented Youngwoon.I frowned. Have they?As I thought, Youngwoon turned to me.“Hyung, would you happen to have clothes I could wear, or — ““Uh, yeah,” I said, flustered. “Uh — yeah. In my — in my room.”“Thanks,” he said easily, then he walked into the hallway and into my room, running his hands along the wall all the while.I only unrooted myself from the spot a few seconds later, then I carefully walked to my room and stood at the doorway, watching. Youngwoon had taken off his hat and hung it on the rack.He saw me watching when he turned around. And from here, he looked so big, so grown up… My grown-up little brother. And feeling my heart tug, I forced a smile. “I’m so proud of you,” I murmured. “You’ve endured it really well.”“It’s really not that bad, hyung,” said Youngwoon bravely.I forced another smile and nodded without saying anything. Liar.Youngwoon walked closer to me until he could reached down and hold my hands.“Hyung, I’m so sorry,” he whispered, his head hung low. His eyes were finally shining with tears. “I know I let you down. And I’m just so — so sorry, and — “I didn’t say anything and wrapped my arms around him to embrace him in a hug. I felt his head fall and rest on my shoulder, and I rubbed his large back warmly.“It’s okay,” I said through my own tears. “It’s okay. You did so well. I’m so proud of you. Welcome back.”Youngwoon sniffled once more and burrowed his face deeper into my shoulder.“It’s okay,” I whispered once more, and I patted his back.We stayed that way for a long, long time, just holding each other. And when we finally separated and looked into each other’s face again, his smile had returned.I reached up to wipe his tears but he grabbed my wrist to pull it away. And then he wiped his own tears, then he wiped my tears for me with his sleeve.“Thanks for waiting,” he said quietly.“How could we not?” I said, then I reached up and wiped his tears. He chuckled and pressed me into another warm hug, which I returned. There was so much to worry about. What if —What about —And soon it’ll be my turn to —I shook my head to clear my thoughts. There was, indeed, much to worry about.I closed my eyes and ran my hand through Youngwoon’s short hair. But just for this moment — just for this moment when I had my little brother back home — everything was perfect.

I turned my back on the cameras, trying to hide my moist eyes. I couldn’t believe this day was here.
